rewatched malena on a slow sunday and remembered why this movie ruined me as a teenager. it's about looking and what looking does and morricone's score is one of the great italian themes ever written. the way tornatore frames her walking through the town is doing the entire thinking of the film. monica bellucci has maybe 40 lines and is somehow the entire emotional architecture. yes the gaze stuff is uncomfortable and yes that's part of the point. some of the comedy beats with the kid haven't aged well but that's a minor complaint about a movie that still wrecks me at 33 like it did at 16. the war ending is brutal. it's about being a woman, being seen, being unprotected. it's about a boy realizing too late what was happening. i don't think there's a clean way to feel about this movie and that's exactly why it stays with me. happy to give this 9 again. probably will be 9 forever

HORROR COMEDY HYBRID NATION RISE UP. 8 outta 10. this is the exact tone i want from january horror — silly enough to laugh, mean enough to make you flinch, lean enough to get out at 95 minutes. the freezer setpiece is the kind of thing i'll be talking about with my horror friends for weeks. give it more eyes.

longer than a sunday hangover and somehow i still enjoyed it. the water looks so pretty i almost forgot the plot is mostly a copy paste of the first one. the third act hits hard tho and the new villain is honestly menacing in a way the previous one wasn't. cameron knows what he's doing even when he repeats himself. yes i'll see the next one.

trash. that's the whole review but ok let me elaborate since i'm in this far. wooden performances, a script that thinks it's clever and isn't, a third act i could see coming from minute 12. the romance has zero chemistry and the stakes don't matter. dropped my rating to a 2 and felt generous about it.

the bride looks gorgeous and the production design is doing the heavy lifting. story-wise its a hot mess but the vibes carry it pretty far before the third act collapses. christian bale eating the scenery in his five minutes of screen time is worth the price of admission alone. would watch a directors cut. would not pay for the theatrical.

what kind of movie is this seriously. the effects look like they're from 2008 and not in a charming way. the kraken itself is on screen for maybe 8 minutes total which is a crime for a movie called kraken. the rest is people in helicopters yelling about coordinates. dropped from a 4 to a 3 by the credits.

perfectly acceptable popcorn movie. didn't change my life. didn't ruin my evening either. butler is doing his thing — gritty everydad in another impossible scenario — and it works because he's earnest and the script doesn't get in the way. the cgi has improved since the first one. would watch a third one and probably not remember any of it.

ok so i was bracing myself for a soulless cash grab and instead i got the closest thing to actually fun mainstream comedy in years. meryl looks like she's having a blast which makes everything better. the new assistant character is annoying on purpose but the script knows it and that's the whole point. miranda's daughter being all grown up was a gut punch i did not see coming. honestly the fashion is louder, the digs are sharper, and the ending earns its sentimentality. anne hathaway gets ONE scene and it's the best three minutes of the movie. give the writers a raise. i'll be rewatching this on a plane within a year, mark my words.

trash. literally. ok ok i'll stop with the title puns. but the movie genuinely is not even fun-bad, it's just bad-bad. the metal scene aesthetic is wasted on a script that doesn't know what it wants to say. the kills are cheap. the lead is checked out. dropped after the third act swerve which made no sense.

this one really commits to its bit. opening 20 min are kind of slow then it absolutely loses its mind. i don't think it all lands but the practical gore in the orchard scene is the kind of thing horror nerds will be talking about for a while. solid

park chan-wook is in his 'older man at peace' era and somehow it's still incredibly violent. the comedy of corporate desperation lands harder than i expected. lee byung-hun continues to be one of the most quietly devastating actors alive. some of the office politics gets a touch broad but the long takes more than make up for it. solid 8.

didn't have 'historical drama about texas oil makes me weep' on my 2025 bingo card but here we are. small movie, huge punch. the lead carries every scene with this quiet stubborn grief that builds and builds. the cinematography knows when to hold and when to move. there's a graveyard scene at the end that absolutely wrecked me.

lifetime movie energy with a much bigger budget and somehow that combo works. sydney sweeney is doing the most and i mean that with affection. the twist is broadcast from minute 12 but it's still fun watching everyone pretend they don't see it coming. a perfect 'fold laundry while it plays' movie. i was folding laundry. it played. mission accomplished. it doesn't reinvent anything but it's competent and shiny and my mom called halfway through to ask if she should watch it. yes mom watch it.

look i'm a sucker for superman done sincere and gunn understood the assignment. the first 30 min are the best superman moments since reeve and i will not back down from that take. corenswet's smile in the rooftop scene? thats it. that's the movie. krypto is a menace in the best way. the lex stuff is too much and not enough at the same time which is sort of impressive. lois has the screen presence of a person who has read a newspaper, which is more than i can say for past lois's. the second act drags a little and the cgi gets goopy in the climax but i was grinning through almost all of it. went with my dad who hadn't seen a superhero movie since the 80s and he was visibly emotional during the rescue sequence. the bar was on the floor and gunn vaulted clean over it. give him the keys to whatever he wants.

the title told me everything and the movie did not exceed expectations. fine for a tuesday i guess but not memorable. it's an action-horror that can't decide which lane it's in so it ends up doing both poorly. the practical gore in act two is decent. the writing is not. would not seek out, would not actively avoid.

the original devil wears prada is comfort food at this point. that florals montage. that's it. that's my whole review honestly but ok. meryl is a witch in the best way. anne hathaway selling the makeover. the chunky belt scene. it's a 2000s artifact and a genuinely good script and i will rewatch it forever. 9.

i was the loudest hail mary defender from the day they announced this and i'm happy to report i was correct. the relationship between rocky and the alien works so well that when act 3 hits it actually wrecked me. yes the science gets handwavey at points but if you came for hard sci-fi rigor go read the book again. the practical effects on rocky are insane. i kept forgetting it wasn't a real creature. best big-budget sci-fi since arrival imo. seeing it in imax was the right call. stayed for the whole credits like a dork because the score is unreal. would i nitpick? sure. the framing of grace's flashbacks gets repetitive. but i don't care because i was crying in row F.

zootopia 2 doesn't recapture the magic of the first one but it's also not the disaster i was bracing for. the buddy cop chemistry still works, the world building gets a bit more interesting, and there's one extended sequence in the rainforest district that genuinely made me grin. the antagonist is forgettable. the songs are mid. but i had a perfectly fine time and so did my nephews and that's what matters

the bone temple is the better of the two follow ups in my opinion and yes i will fight people about this. the body horror in the cathedral sequence is some of the most disturbing studio horror in years. cillian's cameo is brief but devastating. the ending sets up the third one in a way that doesn't feel cheap which is a minor miracle. boyle is doing what he wants and getting away with it which is honestly inspirational. some pacing issues in the middle act because there's too much exposition about the mutation timeline but i forgive it. the score by young fathers is probably my favorite thing they've done. i saw this with my friend who hates horror and even she admitted it was 'rude' which from her is high praise. the scene with the kid in the kitchen will be in my brain forever and i hate that.

wasn't scary, wasn't funny, wasn't anything. shame because the trailer promised something weirder and the first 10 minutes had a vibe i was actually buying. then it just settles into generic a24-adjacent dread without earning it. the lead is good. the script is not. one star off because the final shot is genuinely cool. otherwise nope.

didn't expect a pingpong movie to make me feel things but here we are. timothée pulls off the haircut against all odds. the third act match is shot like a heist with the same tension and rhythm and i was on the edge of my couch. the supporting cast is doing real work. a touch indulgent in the middle but i forgive it.

i fell asleep twice. third time was the charm i guess. it's not that the movie is bad exactly, it's that there's nothing to grip onto. the animation is fine, the voice cast is fine, the story is fine. nothing soars and nothing falls flat. it's the cinematic equivalent of a glass of room temperature water. forgettable.

this one actually destroyed me. saw it with my cousin on a sunday and we both ended up crying in the car on the way to dinner. the lead is doing brutal work with material that in lesser hands would have tipped into cheap sentimentality. theres a kitchen scene around the 80 min mark thats one of the best things ive seen all year. lost a point because the third act drags and the resolution is too clean for all the pain it built up but still. keeping it. recommending it to all my friends who've gone through divorces. and the ones who havent

lee cronin once again proving he understands what makes a horror movie WORK. it's not the lore it's the framing. the underground sequence is so claustrophobic i had to pause to walk to the kitchen. the curse stuff is whatever, it's the camera work that sells it. one star deducted for the cgi finale because of course

i went into hamnet expecting prestige bait and got something so quiet and devastating that i sat through the credits unable to move. paul mescal looking like a 16th century puppy and somehow making it work. the scene where she's sewing — anyone who's lost someone will know exactly what i mean. zhao's direction is incredibly restrained which is the right call for the material because if you turned the volume up on any of this it would tip into melodrama. instead you get this slow accumulation of grief that doesn't release until the final 20 minutes. and when it releases. christ. i had to call my mom afterward. only complaint is the framing device with the play feels a touch academic and pulls you out of the emotional flow. but honestly i'm nitpicking. one of the best things i'll see this year and i'm calling it now even though it's only may. give it every award. or don't. it'll outlive the discourse either way.

the pandas are cute and that's it. the movie is not. the action is sloppy, the comedy doesn't translate, and the kids in the audience were checking their phones which is basically a death sentence for a family movie. the panda animatronic stuff is impressive though so i'll give it half a star for craft. otherwise. nope.

May 6, 2026

Unknown

ok i'm conflicted. the cinematography is gorgeous like every frame is a painting. but the pacing is GLACIAL and i kept checking my phone which is the worst thing i can say about a movie. also the dialogue is so faithful to the book that it sounds weird coming out of modern faces. emerald fennell knows what she's doing visually but i think she's allergic to scenes that breathe. there's a kitchen scene in the second hour that's genuinely the best thing i've watched all year. and then the rest of the movie is.. also there. i went with my book club and we argued about it for two hours afterward which is probably the highest compliment i can give it. would i sit through it again? probably not for a few years. but i'm glad it exists.

this had every ingredient for a great romance and somehow it just never clicked for me. felt like i was watching from behind glass. cute scenes but no chemistry where it counted. the leads look great together in the marketing photos and not so much when they actually have to act in the same room. shrug. moving on.

May 6, 2026

mid. that's the whole word but ok. it's a perfectly competent action thriller that exists. some setpieces work, some don't. you forget about it before you even get up off the couch. the lead is fine, the villain is forgettable. would not recommend, would not actively avoid. just kinda. there. shrug.

May 6, 2026

nope. saw the trailer, was already nope. watched it anyway, still nope. the found-footage thing is cooked. the scares are bargain bin. the kills are repetitive. i don't know what they spent the budget on but it wasn't editing or sound design. dropped at 40 minutes and didn't go back.

send help is exactly the kind of mid-budget horror comedy that gets buried by the algorithm and that's a crime. it's mean spirited in a fun way and the lead carries the whole thing on charisma alone. the third act swerve genuinely surprised me

decent creature feature with a much smaller scale than i expected. the practical ape design is great. the script is mostly serviceable but theres one monologue from the lead that's accidentally hilarious — i had to pause and rewatch it. would watch a sequel honestly. small budget, mostly good choices, occasionally cheesy. a fun late night watch.

i went in expecting a cute romcom and got something way meaner than that. the second act drags but the breakup montage is one of the meanest things ive seen in a movie this year. that scene at the wedding tho. ouch.

sleeper hit of the year for me. who put real heart in an animated sports movie. and the soundtrack? unreal. didn't expect to care about the underdog arc but the third act match got me genuinely yelling at the screen. the friendship dynamic is the actual hook, not the sports. tell your friends. it deserves more eyes than it got.

kept my niece quiet for 90 min so honestly 6/10 lmao. mario galaxy was my fav game ever and seeing the comet observatory on screen made me a little soft ngl. lost interest around the bowser jr arc tho — felt like the script ran out of ideas around the second act. still, the visuals are unreal and the music goes hard.

this one's better than the first which is wild bc the first slapped. samara weaving committing absolutely to the bit. there's a setpiece in a dumbwaiter im gonna think about for weeks. lost a point bc the third act gets repetitive but who cares im still buying a poster

i cried at a scene about an old toy. you have all the data you need to know if you'll cry too. it's not the best in the franchise — that's still 3 — but it earns its emotional moments and doesn't overstay its welcome. some of the new toys are forgettable and the antagonist is mid. but pixar still knows how to wreck me apparently.

saw this on the plane back from chicago. perfectly fine. forgot most of it by the time i landed. would not seek it out again but if it's there it's there. there was a third act twist that i think i liked? something about a brother. the lead has charisma but the script doesn't give him enough to hold onto.
